The original Hebrew-Aramaic name of Jesus is yeshu‘a, which is short for yehōshu‘a or Joshua. The etymological account of the name Jesus is as follows: in Hebrew/Aramaic yeshu‘a became Greek Iēsous, then Latin Iesus, and then into English as Jesus.

Here is just some of what the Scripture says about the name of Jesus:

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:20)

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become Children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12)
